DiLytics Cloud-Based PBCS Solution Optimizes Planning and Budgeting

The client is the largest city and the county seat of Alameda County, California. It is a major West Coast port, the largest city in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, the third-largest city overall in the Bay Area, and the eighth-most populated city in California. It serves as a trade center.

Background

The client had implemented a planning and budgeting solution from Oracle Corporation, called Oracle Planning and Budgeting Cloud Service (PBCS).

Budgeting is an iterative process that requires planners to come up with multiple scenarios and versions of the Plan for review. Based on review feedback and resulting calculations, planned numbers need to be revised several times for improvement before the plan can be finalized and approved. This iterative process becomes very cumbersome without comprehensive insight into the Plan numbers at different stages in the process. Though Oracle PBCS provided some out-of-the-box reports, the client users did not find them to provide adequate visibility. Due to this, client’s business users found it challenging to perform the Planning and Budgeting functions efficiently.

Hence, the client identified the need for an Analytics solution to address the limited reporting in PBCS. In addition, it was identified that the Analytics solution should be hosted on the cloud so that IT maintenance effort is kept to a minimum.

Solution

DiLytics has a prebuilt solution, PBCS Insight, for Planning and Budgeting which is approved by Oracle Corporation and is published in Oracle Marketplace. DiLytics implemented PBCS Insight to provide comprehensive reporting on Oracle PBCS data. The key elements of the DiLytics solution were to:

  • Identify the data objects to be integrated from Oracle PBCS to Oracle Analytics Cloud
  • Determine the REST APIs in Oracle PBCS to extract data
  • Leverage DiLytics Java package to schedule PBCS data extracts
  • Use Oracle Data Sync to integrate PBCS data into Oracle Analytics Cloud
  • Model PBCS data in Oracle Analytics Cloud as a business dictionary
  • Develop reports and dashboards on PBCS data in Oracle Analytics Cloud

As part of the implementation, DiLytics carried out:

  • Requirements review and analysis
  • Custom package development
  • Design and build of ETL data integration, data warehouse, and Oracle Analytics Cloud report
  • Conference Room Pilot
  • System Testing and User Acceptance Testing (UAT)
  • Code migration and Go-live deployment
  • Training
  • Knowledge Transfer and Post Production Support

Business Benefits

  • Optimized planning process with availability of analytics on a 24×7 basis
  • Efficient running of the budgeting process by an empowered planning team
  • Improved business predictability via the facilitation of enterprise-wide and department-level planning and budgeting.

Technical Stack
