Enterprise Data Warehouse Implementation Enabled Improved Business Performance

The client is a holding company that focuses on purchasing, leasing, and resale of marine cargo containers. It is one of the world’s largest intermodal container lessors with more than 4 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEU) in its owned and managed fleet. It also leads the resale industry, having secured the status as one of the largest sellers of used containers with over 1,000 clients purchasing more than 130,000 units annually from it. 

 

Background

To meet its analytical reporting needs in a manner that would reduce traditional dependence on IT, the client had embarked upon a Business Intelligence (BI) initiative.

 

Solution

DiLytics implemented an enterprise data warehouse project that sourced data from multiple homegrown systems – General Ledger data from JDE, Billing data from AS400 and Asset Management Data from Real Asset Management (RAM). The data warehouse caters to the reporting needs of Upper Management (CEO & CIO), Marketing, Operations, Resale, Credit, Accounting, Finance & FP&A teams of the client:  

CEO/CIO Dashboards:  
  • Provided critical dashboards & reports for top management like Net Operating Income (NOI), Top clients, Fleet Performance
Marketing Team:  
  • Provided overview of Lease-outs, Turn-Ins, Bookings & Container Utilization
  • Insight into Factory inventory, Factory Lease-Outs, Average days units in the factory & Equipment Ramp-up Days
  • Reports on Booking Activity, Unbooked Credit capacity & container Float Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Created reports to help Identify best-performing depots and help reposition containers at minimum costs
  • Provide detailed insight into client activity & client KPIs like Credit Limit, On-Hire Position, Average Rent rate, Average Age of containers, DSO & lease details
  • Provided dashboard to help track depot Activity with reports like Stock availability by depot, average days containers are at depot & Ramp-up report to identify average Turn-In to Lease-out duration
Operations Team:  
  • Created an Overview Dashboard to track the Global Turn-ins, Damaged Turn-ins, Days in Depot, etc
  • Created a Repair dashboard specially designed to provide information on units repaired, number of units awaiting repair, Units pending repair, Average days taken to repair & Repair Cycle history
Resale Team:  
  • Provided resale team with a powerful dashboard that provides insight into a number of units sold, Average sales prices, Sales around days & Profit/loss metrics over the last 15 months
  • Provided resale activity dashboard with top Resale locations, best resale prices, best locations by sales volume, etc

Credit Team:  
  • Provided Bankruptcy Dashboard to help Recover containers from bankrupt lessees
  • Created KPIs to provide insight into Total containers held, Containers recovered, Recovery %, Containers Booked for Turn-in & Balance to be recovered
  • Provided a detailed list of units held by Bankrupt lessees & their sales details
  • Provided Credit watch reports by the client
Accounting Team:  
  • Provided a dashboard with various reports like Balance Sheet Summary, Container count Summary, Write-down/Write-up summary, etc
  • Provided Disposal summary & detail reports by Age, Manufacture date, Owner, Balance Sheet Indicator, Equipment Type, etc
  • Provided reports on Direct Finance Lease (DFL) Units.
